Hailing from Hawks Bay New Zealand, “The Supernatural” is exactly what it’s name says! Situated on a north-facing hillside with slopes up to 30 degrees, the soil is Matapiro sandy loam over Kidnappers Group fossiliferous sandstone overlain by carbonaceous mudstone, tephra, ignimbrite. 92% of NZ’s vineyards are on flat land with alluvial gravel soils, so this soil and site produce a very distinctive wine in a New Zealand context. Concentrated and intense, the wine leaves no doubt of its origin and reflects the supernatural cosmic vibrations emitted from the earth which make it complex and fun to drink.
Winemaker, Hayden Penny, is a new-age hippie winemaker focused on biodynamics and super low sulfur. I am a strong believer in biodynamics and the combination of technology, precision and ancient farming techniques that follow the natural cycles of the earth, the moon, and the plants in order to get the most interesting and complex fruit. Before harvesting, the grapes are allowed to fully mature while retaining enough acidity to create amazing tension in the glass. Characters of white soils and slight flintiness followed by the classic gooseberry, star fruit, faint pineapple and, dare I say, jalapeño aromas. This is a wine to drink and shared!
