Quinta De Morocco is tucked along the left bank of the Douro River. Founded in the early 1900’s, this winery remains in the Sequeira family to this day. Sisters Rita and Catarina Sequeira are the fourth generation to run the winery. Rita is the wine maker, while her sister, Catarina, takes care of the business side.
The wines from the Douro have long been famous as the source of Port, a fortified wine drank as a digestive. During the colonial times English mariners brought Port everywhere they went which gave Port, or Oporto, worldwide recognition. In addition to Port, ancient wineries of Douro have been making red, white and rose to drink at the dinner table.
With an eye on tradition and authenticity, the Sequeira sisters have maintained many traditions of the region. Heirlooms such as granite presses where the grapes are pressed by foot, and cellars where the wine is aged in ancient wooden casks are combined with modern enological techniques to create wines of authenticity.
